The love-making of boys and girls involved no obligations on either side but if two young people had been lovers for some time and had become fond of each other, they began to consider marriage. Usually, it was the boy who took the initiative and asked the girl whether she was willing to become his wife. If a girl did not relish the prospect of marrying her lover, or feared opposition on the part of her parents, she would refuse his proposal and shelter behind the authority of her father and mother. A girl determined to hold on to her lover, however, could usually get her way, or, in the last resort, elope with him to a friendly village. |
