If one of Shankok sisters' had died, he would have received from her husband, or, if the latter no longer lived, from his closest agnatic kinsman, a death due of one field. The obligation to give presents to his sister's conjugal family terminated with her death only if she died childless. If she left a son, he would have received annual gifts from Shankok, and even a daughter would have had a claim on her mother's brother. For three years after the marriage of a sister's daughter Shankok would have given her presents at the spring festival. In return Shankok was entitled to a death due of one brass plate on the death of his sister's eldest son and to a part of any bride price received for his sister's daughter. |
