There were as yet no obvious signs of change in the social structure, and the government of the villages was run on traditional lines. The chiefs, though deprived of their power over life and death, still wielded considerable authority, and the differences in the obligations and the privileges of aristocrats and commoners persisted. Schools had been operating for only a few years, and it was too early to say whether primary education would alter the people's attitude to the social order and the class structure. |
