The Wanchus, it seemed, were not yet conscious of any modifications in the political relations between villages, and paramount chiefs continued to receive tribute from the smaller villages of their domain, but there can be little doubt that with the suppression of warfare, the need for alliances and the protection of small villages will disappear, and that the authority and prestige of powerful chiefs will gradually wane. |
