28. A case occurred at Laisong in 1940. An Impoi youth courted a Laisong girl. He was assaulted by the Laisong rahangmi, who objected to his instrusion, and the negotiators he sent to the girl's parents were repulsed on the grounds that he was an undesirable suitor. He and the girl eloped before the harvest. The Laisong headmen went to the headmen of Impoi, and the girl was returned on the understanding that the couple should marry formally in the early Spring. Her parents attempted later to repudiate this agreement, but the marriage took place. The girl later turned out a persistant thief. The Impoi villagers demanded her expulsion and her husband divorced her at his elder brother's insistence. |
