let is be known that on friday 28.1.1551 at Hennyngham Castle in the county of Essex before me Jn Churche steward of our gracious lord Jn earl of Oxford lord of the manor of Colne Priory came Jn Rome and Margt his wife and Margt herself solely and secretly examined by me the aforesaid steward and acknowledged surrendered into the hands of the lord by the hands of me the said steward in the presence of Walt Bantofte of Jn Stokes Jn Whyte and others about 1r of land etc now built on lying in Henningham Castle upon which a certain sheepfold was once built by a portion of the tithe of the said Priory levied on the same village and lying between a croft of land called Brasyers Croft on the west part and a garden of the said earl now in the tenure of Thos Bragge on the east part one head thereof abutting upon a field of the said earl called Shypcote Feild towards the south and the other head thereof abutting upon the king's highway leading from Henningham Castle towards Braintree towards the north as by the metes and bounds etc with this intention viz that the lord should regrant seisin thereof of the said 1r of land now built on with appurtenances to the aforesaid Jn Rome and Margt his wife to hold to them during the whole term of their lives and to the longer liver from the lord by the rod at the will of the lord according to the custom of the manor etc the remainder thereof after their decease and of the longer liver to Robt Brewster of Henningham Castle and Joan his wife to hold to them and their heirs from the lord by the rod at the will of the lord according to the custom of the manor upon the following condition viz that if the said Robt Brewster his heirs or assigns should pay or cause to be paid to the aforesaid Jn Rome and Margt his wife or one of them or to their rightful attorneys or executors 10li in the following manner and form namely at the feast of michaelmas next following in the dwelling house of Robt himself in the said Henningham Castle 60s and thus from year to year always in the place and at the said feast during three years then next following 40s and at the feast of michaelmas then next following in the said place 20s in full payment of the said 10li that then the present surrender together with the said remainder should stand in all its force and remain in effect otherwise it should be void etc
