this case was held in camera in the inn called the White Lion in Kelvedon on the 28.10.1587 before mr Tayler in the presence of the notary public Jn Redston office of the judge against Thos Smith of Earls Colne detected by the wardens and sidesmen in these words "we present Thos Smith tanner as concerning certain books which were taken from him by the justice was had in suspicion for but what they were for they know not " he appeared and he said he confessed that mr Israel Amys one of her majesty's justice of peace in Essex did midsummer last past take from this respondent out of his house certain books concerning astronomy surgery and physic and otherwise denied the articles and offered to purge himself under five hands the judge ordered him to purge himself with five on the 1.12.1587 in St Peter Colchester the intimation to be made memorand to make ready the letters testimonial upon this purgation found 12d
