in the name of god amen the 3.9.1614 etc I Wm Prentice of Colne Engaine in the county of Essex yeoman being of perfect memory and good understanding thanks be given to almighty god therefore do ordain make and declare this my present last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say first of all and specially commending my soul into the hands of almighty god my creator with an assured hope of eternal life and salvation through the only merit of jesus christ my saviour and redeemer and my body to be decently buried in christian burial at the discretion of mine executors I give and bequeath to Helen my loving wife all that the messuage or tenement wherein I now dwell with all the houses edifices buildings yards and gardens with the croft of land there adjoining and one croft of free land called Redinge to the same tenement belonging with the appurtenances and also all that close of customary land called     set lying and being in Colne Engaine aforesaid to have and to hold to her and assigns during the term of her natural life and after her decease to remain to Wm Prentice my son and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten and for want of such issue and also all that croft of customary land called Churchfield and the forecrop of 1a2r and first share of 1a2r of meadow lying in the common meadow of Colne Engaine called Engaine Meadow next towards the common meadow(inserted) to have and to hold to her and her assigns for term of her natural life and after her decease to remain to Wm Prentice my son and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten and for want of such issue to remain to Jn Prentice my other son and his heirs forever item I will give and bequeath unto the said Helen my wife five loads of wood yearly and every year during the term of her natural life to be well and orderly made and sized according to the custom of the country upon my customary land called Engaine Land or some of them and my will and mind was that the said five loads of wood yearly as aforesaid shall be made carried and land at the yard of the tenement wherein I now dwell by the said Wm Prentice my son or his heirs or assigns at his or their own cost and charges to the use of my said wife or her assigns and if the said Wm Prentice my son or his heirs or assigns shall make default in making or delivering the said loads of wood yearly to my said wife or her assigns contrary to the form aforesaid and contrary to my true intent and meaning the I will give and devise to my said wife all that my free or croft of customary land commonly called late Digletts with the appurtenances containing by estimation 6a to have and to hold to her and her assigns immediately from and after such default made for and during the term of her natural life item I give and bequeath to Jn Prentice my son all that my tenement in Earls Colne now in the tenure of Clem Turner or his assigns with all barns houses edifices buildings yards gardens and orchards to the same belonging with the appurtenances called Warkemans or by whatsoever other name or names the same are called or known and also all those my lands meadows and pastures in Earls Colne aforesaid both free and copy called Burrowes Burrowes Meade (at end of page names of the witnesses and testator subscribed) Nokes or by whatsoever other name or names the same are called or known by which are now in the tenure or occupation of the said Clem Turner or his assigns to have and to hold to the said Jn Prentice my son and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten upon condition that he the said Jn Prentice or the heirs of his body lawfully begotten pay or cause to be paid to the said Helen my wife the sum of 40s of good lawful money of England yearly during the term of her natural life at my now dwelling house in Colne Engaine aforesaid at the feasts of annunciation and michaelmas or within sixteen days next after either of the said feasts by even and equal portions and if the said Jn my son shall die with no heirs of his body lawfully begotten then I will that the said lands tenements and hereditaments in Earls Colne aforesaid shall remain to the said Wm Prentice my son and his heirs forever upon condition that he the said Wm his heirs or assigns pay or cause to be paid to the said Helen my wife or her assigns the said sum of 40s a year in manner and form aforesaid and if the said Wm and his heirs and assigns shall make default in payment of the said sum of 40s by year contrary to the form aforesaid then I will give and bequeath the said tenement called Warkemans with barns houses edifices buildings yards gardens orchards and other appurtenances to the said Helen my wife and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life item I give and bequeath to Wm Prentice my son the sum of 30li of good lawful money of England to be paid to him by mine executor within six months next after my decease item I give and bequeath to the said Wm Prentice my son and his heirs all that my customary land and meadow called Engains Broome and Engains Meadow upon condition that the said Wm Prentice my son or his heirs or assigns pay or cause to be paid to Helen Prentice and Eliz Prentice my two daughters the sum of 40li of good lawful money of England at or in the south porch of the parish church of Colne Engaine aforesaid within two years and a half next after my decease viz to either of them 20li apiece or the survivor of them 40li if either of them fortune to die before the end of the said two years and a half and if the said Wm my son and his heirs and assigns shall make default in payment of the said sum of 40li or any part or parcel thereof the time and place aforesaid contrary to the form aforesaid then I give and bequeath the said land and meadow called Engains Broome and Engains Meaddow to the said Helen and Eliz my daughters and their heirs forever item I give to my said son Wm Prentice my bay gelding and I give to my son Jn Prentice my bay stoned horse and my sucking mare colt item I give to the said Wm and Jn my sons all my timber that is now in my yards ready hewn and also my boards and rails that are already sawn and all my lathes already riven to be equally parted and divided between them item I give to my said two daughters Helen and Eliz viz to either of them one cow item I give to the said Helen my daughter one cupboard standing in the parlour item I give to the said Eliz my daughter my posted bedstead item I give to the said Helen and Eliz my daughters viz to either of them one hutch or coffer and to either of them six pieces of pewter item I give to the said Jn Prentice my son six lambs item I give unto every one of my godchildren 12d apiece witnesses mark Nich Borley mark Jn Crabbe Robt Cobbe mark Wm Prentice item I give to the poor people of the parish of Colne Engaine aforesaid the sum of 20s to good lawful money of England to be distributed amongst the most needy poor people of the said parish by mine executrix with the advise of mr Parkinson the minister there and the overseers for the poor of the same parish within one month next after my decease item I give and bequeath to the poor people of Earls Colne the sum of 10s of good lawful money to England to be distributed amongst them by the overseers of the said parish within one month next after my decease item I give to Wm Buntinge my servant one lamb all the rest of my goods and chattels of what sort nature or kind soever the same be debts duties and personal rights whatsoever and howsoever due and owing unto me and herein now formerly given and bequeathed as I give and bequeath to the said Helen my wife whom I ordain and make sole executrix of this my present will and testament to see the same duly and justly executed and performed my debts and legacies paid my funeral charges defrayed and my body decently buried and I ordain and make my loving friend and cousin Edw Prentice of Colne Engaine aforesaid to be overseer of this my present will and testament praying him to be aiding and assisting to my said executrix in executing the same and I give unto him the sum of 6s8d of good lawful money of England for his pains about the same over and above all his charges and expenses in witness that is my last will and testament contained and written within three sheets of paper I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written in the presence of the witnesses whose names are hereunto subscribed mark Wm Prentice
