in the name of god amen I dame Hester Honywood widow and relict of sir Thos Honywood late of Markshall in the county of Essex knight deceased and daughter and heir of Jn Lamott late of London esq deceased being by the blessing of god of a disposing mind and memory revoking all wills by me formerly made do make this my last will and testament first I humbly resign myself to the good pleasure of god either for life or death expecting salvation only by the meritorious death and passion of my blessed lord and saviour jesus christ who died for sinners and when my pilgrimage on earth shall be ended I desire that my body be interred near the body of my said late husband and I appoint the charges of my funeral not to exceed 200li item whereas I have since the death of my said father purchased Loueney Hall and other lands and tenements in the said county of Essex and the assurances thereof were by my direction made either in my own name and in the name of Jn Lamott Honywood esq my son or in the name of my said son only yet in trust to be disposed at my will and pleasure I do give limit and appoint all and singular the said lands messuages and tenements except such of them as I have lately settled or agreed to settle upon the marriage of my said son which I do hereby will and agree to be and remain to the uses in the said settlement upon marriage limited to my said son and to the heirs of his body and for default of such issue then I give the said messuages lands and tenements except before excepted to sir Thos Willis bart Humph Monox esq Mark Guyon esq and Math Elliston (may be Math Elliston) clerk their executors and administrators upon trust and confidence in them reposed and for the raising out of the rents and profits thereof the sums of monies hereafter mentioned that is to say 100li to be paid unto Thos Cotton son of sir Jn Cotton bart and my daughter dame Eliz his wife 100li more to be paid unto Robt Cotton another of the sons of the said sir Jn Cotton and dame Eliz and 100li more to be paid unto Phil Cotton another of the sons of the said sir Jn Cotton and dame Eliz at their respective ages of 21yr and until their full ages I will that the said sums shall be put out for their benefits and advantages to such person and persons as the said sir Jn Cotton and dame Eliz shall by writings under their hands and seals nominate and appoint and from and after the said sums shall or may be raised I do devise the said messuages lands and tenements except before excepted to the younger sons of the said dame Eliz Cotton and to the heirs of the body or bodies of such younger sons and if any of the said younger sons die without heirs of their bodies then I give the same to the survivors or survivor of them and the heirs of the body or bodies of such survivor and for default of such issue I give the same to my right heirs forever also whereas by virtue of some deeds of settlement by made by my said honoured father one annuity or yearly rent of 100marks or thereabouts was settled on my said daughter or upon others in trust for her or upon such persons as she should by writing under her hand and seal nominate for and during her life to be issuing out of the manor of Fulmer and other lands in the county of Cambridge as also one other annuity of 40li or thereabouts issuing out of the demesne lands of the manor of Feering in the said county of Essex was given or limited to or to the use my said daughter for her life by my said late father both which I did for a valuable consideration purchase of my said daughter by the consent of the said sir Jn Cotton before their inter marriage and whereas the lease of the demesne lands and other lands in Feering is since surrendered and a new lease thereof procured and made at my cost and charges in which new lease my said son's life is inserted which said new lease I have since settled and amongst other uses to the intent I may give limit and appoint the annuity or yearly rent of 40li therein mentioned during the life of my said daughter to such person or persons as I shall think fit as by the indenture of the said settlement more at large appeareth I do therefore hereby give limit and appoint the said annuities or yearly rents together with all and every power or powers of distress advantages benefits and appurtenances to the same belonging unto the said sir Thos Willis Humph Monox Mark Guyon and Math Elliston (may be Math Elliston) their heirs and assigns during the life of my said daughter in trust nevertheless and for the sole use and benefit of Eliz Cotton Hester Cotton and Margt Cotton daughters of the said sir Jn Cotton and dame Eliz for and during the joint lives of the said sir Jn Cotton and dame Eliz to be equally divided amongst the said daughters the survivors or survivor of the said daughters and paid unto them at their respective ages of 21yr or days of marriage which shall first happen and the annuities to be put out and improved by the said trustees for the benefit of the said daughters their survivors or survivor of them and immediately from and after the death of the said sir Jn Cotton then upon trust that the said trustees and their heirs shall permit and suffer the said dame Eliz Cotton and her assigns to have and receive the said annuities or yearly rents to be by her disposed for the maintenance or increase of the portions of all her children or any of them as shall think fit and whereas my said late father by and with my consent and desire did settle and assure the said manor of Fulmer and the said site of the said manor of Feering and all other his lands of inheritance and real estate from and after my decease to and upon or in trust for my son Jn Lamott Honywood and the heirs of his body and for default of such issue to and upon or in trust for my said daughter dame Eliz Cotton and the heirs of her body with remainders over and whereas I have settled the said new lease of the site of the said manor of Feering and other lands in Feering to the same uses that were limited by my said father and whereas my said son hath a considerable estate from his father to dispose of at his pleasure I do by this my will desire my said son and as his mother command and require him upon my blessing that he do not at any time hereafter commit or do nor willingly permit or suffer to be done any act or thing whereby the said manors and lands of my said late father together with the lands by me purchased shall not descend or come to the said dame Eliz Cotton and the heirs of her body in case my said son shall happen to depart this life without issue of his body which god in mercy prevent item I give to my daughter Honywood my diamond bracelets containing thirty tablets also I give to the said sir Jn Cotton and dame Eliz his wife the sum of 100li of lawful money of England to buy them mourning and one silver basin and ewer which said basin and ewer after their decease I give to their son Thos Cotton item I give to my said daughter one dozen of silver plates and one silver tankard also I give to the said dame Eliz Cotton a picture of queen Eliz in an agate jewel certain pieces of gold in number ten further I give to my granddaughter the said Eliz Cotton the sum of 200li of like lawful money to be paid unto her at her age of 21yr or day of marriage which shall first happen and in the mean time I will that the same be put out and improved to the best advantage by my executor if he please or if he refuse then the same to put out by sir Mich Heneage knight for her benefit and I give to the said Eliz Cotton my granddaughter my little silver warming pan one of my silver basins with a brim and twelve silver spoons the wrought red bed curtains valance counterpane featherbed bolster pillows rug and blankets in the mourning room (sic) the palliasse bed bolster and bedding thereunto belonging that is in the hall chamber the bed bolster and bedding thereunto which is in the kitchen chamber and two featherbeds with their appurtenances out of the gallery and the bedstead bed and all the furniture thereunto belonging being that wherein she lieth standing in my chamber also I give to my said granddaughter Eliz Cotton all my linen marked with I L (or J L) all my linen marked with I H and all other the goods which at the time of my decease shall be in the closet in the gallery called my daughter's closet to be divided by my said daughter dame Eliz Cotton into three parts whereof my said granddaughter Eliz to have two parts and the third part to be equally divided by the said dame Eliz and one part of the said third part I give to the said Hester Cotton and the other part to the said Margt Cotton the said linen and goods to be delivered into the hands of their mother to be by her delivered to them respectively at their ages of 21yr or days of marriage which shall first happen item I give to my granddaughter Eliz all my wearing apparel and wearing linen entrusting my said daughter to direct my said granddaughter to dispose those of the said things that are not fit for her to such persons as have been serviceable to me item I bequeath and devise unto my said granddaughter Eliz Cotton and to the heirs of her body the copyhold land which I bought of one Juste Polley held of the manor of Stebbing moreover I do devise and bequeath to my said son Jn Lamott Honywood esq and to my grandson Robt Cotton his godson the profits of the leases of the woods called the Frith and Nuntywood which I hold of the bishop of London equally to be divided between them and my said son to improve the said grandson's moiety for his benefit until his age of 21yr item I give to my said grandsons Robt Cotton and Phil Cotton 50li apiece to be paid within one year after my decease and to be improved for their benefit till their full ages by such person or persons as the said sir Jn Cotton and dame Eliz shall appoint also I give to my loving brothers in law Peter Honywood esq and dr Honywood dean of Lincoln and to my dear brother mr King 10li apiece to buy them a piece of plate or mourning at their election and forasmuch as I have lately been at great charges in repairing the houses I have in jointure and which after my decease are to come to sir Francis Lawly bart and Francis Coventry esq my first husband's grandchildren to their content I give to the said sir Francis a sapphire seal ring with the inscription jacob with his staff which was my husband Manning's and further I give only to the said sir Francis and his lady and to the said Francis Coventry 5li apiece to be paid in gold in remembrance of me acquitting also the said Francis Coventry of all sums of money which I have formerly lent him and I give to my cousin mrs Cecill two pieces of broad gold to my granddaughter Very Coventry two pieces of broad gold to my cousin Mildmay the wife of mr Francis Mildmay 5li to my sister in law mrs Baker two pieces of broad gold to my cousin mr Lewis Calendryne 5li to my cousin Ann Carr daughter of my said brother King 20s to buy her a ring I having lately purchased lands and tenements for her and her children item I give to my granddaughter Coventry now the lady Kites a standing cup of mother of pearl with a cover and frame of silver to my grandson Thos Cotton the double gilt gold watch enamelled with black which was his uncle and godfather's Thos Honywood esq deceased item I bequeath to my servants Phinehas Reeve and Jas Lynnet 5li apiece and to nurse Church Mary Ames Eliza Patricke Martha Peirce and Nich Pierce 40s to each and every of them item I give to the poor of the parish of Markshall 40s and to the poor of the parishes Feering and Fulmer 3li to each and either of them to be distributed by my executor at his discretion within one month after my decease I give to my son Jn Lamott Honywood the jewel that sir Thos Honywood gave me that came from the family of the Brownes and is in the great cabinet in the chamber over the great parlour and the rest of the varieties in the said cabinet I give to be equally divided between my daughter Honywood and my granddaughter Eliz Cotton and whereas there are sundry suites of diaper marked with I M A in a trunk in the gallery my will is they shall be disposed according to such codicil as I shall annex to this my will or by a distinct writing under my hand and seal and all the rest and residue of my plate goods chattels as well real as personal all my linen marked RH E T HH and H H which I found in the house when I married the said sir Thos Honywood or was made or bought into the house since my said marriage or since his death and all other my personal estate my debts legacies herein or by any writing codicil to be hereunto annexed mentioned and funeral charges satisfied and paid I give to my said dear and only son Jn Lamott Honywood freely and absolutely whom I make sole executor of this my last will and testament the blessing of almighty god be upon all my said children and their posterity and unfeigned love and peace be amongst them in witness whereof I have to the bottom of every of these three sheets and the top of the first sheet set my
