27th May '47. To Zhumkiri - 15 miles (6-30 A.M. - 4 P.M.) I had arranged to stop at Lungtsongre deserted village site but just before we got there we were told that there would be not material for porters' camp, so we had to go on to Zhumkiri. The path had been very slippery all day with intermittant rain and the final very steep climb was too much for the porters. Many collapsed and got into camp in driblets over a long period. With steep gradients and slippery paths, ten miles is quite enough for a day's march at this time of year. |

In camp we were told that one of the Mutongre looters, a boy who had gone off homewards with no friends near him had had his head lopped off by Pangre, a pity as it is one up to them. But I had dispersed all the looters once and had tried to discourage Mutongre, even with two rifle shots. So we cannot be blamed. It does prove that not the slightest risk can be taken with these people even if they appear to be making no resistance. |
