A good track wound itself at first for a long time at approximately the same altitude along a hillside. Below us were irrigated rice terraces and jhum fields with rice or millet growing on them. In between the field houses and small huts where people take their meals. Most of the hillside is however not cultivated but is covered with young forest and underbrush as is characteristic of a slash and burn agriculture.
