After I had talked a while with Ahon he took me to a house which was a bit out of the way where just then a pig was sacrificed or rather slaughtered. The unhappy pig was lying in the door already all trussed up and was held by two men. It was a big strong animal and it grunted indignantly although its snout also was tied up. Some women and children were standing around. A small fire was burning inside the house not far from the door. One of the men holds a leaf bowl in his hand. This actually should contain rice beer which is poured onto the pigs head while it is slaughtered. Lacking the rice beer however today water is used instead. The house belongs to a man of the Wang-nau-lim clan, yet he does not kill the pig but the clan elder of the Doalim clan who takes a particular position anyway. (204) We are still waiting for him. |
