killing the pig slowly, children watching |

Finally he arrives, crouches next to the pig and screws a sharpened bamboo stick into his chest just below the ribs. The pigs squeals and rears itself in its fetters but is kept down by the two other men. But apparently the heart is not hit so one of the men pushes the bamboo in deeper. It must be of small comfort to the pig that the pretend rice beer is poured over its head with the request that it should not be angry. (notebook 4 p.44). Even before it is quite dead one of the men cuts off its tail with a dao and puts it up on a bamboo stick into the inner wall of the house. The old man from the Doalim clan receives one half of the stomach and a part of the intestines for his services. The entire, not exactly pleasant performance, has been watched by the children in complete peace of mind and now a five year old entertains himself with kicking the dead pig. |
