salt manufacturing near Mon |
text: |
At this opportunity it was mentioned that a lot of salt can be found near Mon. It is gathered as follows. (244) A pit is dug into the salt rich ground, the bottom of which has to be below the water table. A hollow tree trunk is set up vertically and they make sure that the ground water enters at the bottom. Then the pit is closed again around the tree trunk and salt water can be drawn with bamboo containers from this well formed by the trunk. The water is carried into the village and boiled down in earthern pots. More salt water is added to the residue until finally a considerable amount of salt remains in the pot. |
