text: The whole human crowd now moves downstream and only a few men remain to clean. As it is said that about a mile from here a better trail via Chintang branches off I also decide to wade down that way. My possessions are carried by the paniwala in his basket. In order to protect the soles somewhat I sacrifice a pair of socks. Dressed only in my topee and loin cloth I wobble down river supported by my stick. Even if there is a narrow river bank with big flat rocks it is impossible to walk on them as after four or five steps the soles of ones feet burn unbearably. (16) So I have to stay in the water where the stones are often slightly overgrown and slippery. At the same time the water is not very clear and the current often strong. Only in some places can I drift along a bit.
