Crowds of people stand in the water in front of a great dam. Apparently it is a permanent lock and on one side it has a well built run like a mill shute although today there is no water going through it. (17) Here everyone goes ashore and a huge pandemonium reigns. In a shelter numerous people are cooking so there is no space. I long for shade as desperately as the famous stag for the spring. But I have to go some way through the underbrush just to find the sparse protection of a few bushes. There I get dressed and eat some of the sandwiches brought along, yet I am not very hungry, only want to lie down and stretch out. But it is hot and sticky here and the many passers by do not leave one much peace and quiet. |
