(59) Cheerful screams sounded from the Balang field. Even before I could see it I knew that the morung boys had to be there and nowhere else. On the narrow path to the field we first past a long row of the girls sticks all stuck into the ground and their palm hats lying in the grass. Not far off stood the boys and young mens row of spears. A hearth had been set up in front of the big field hut and several older men sat around the fire. Dust clouds blew from the field hut in which the boys were cheerfully jumping on the rice, sweating, while in the back the rice straw piled up and was occasionally spread out and thrown further away by some boys. |
