(175) Tamlu 7/11/1936. Started out from Wakching at about eight o'clock and went to the Dikhu bungalow with Nlamo while the coolies went via Wanching. The weather was sunny but not exceptionally hot. As I still wanted to be careful about my strength I had asked Castle for a pony which was expecting me at the Dikhu together with a syce and the Kongan chowkidar. I rode most of the long even path along the Dikhu although I had to get off every few minutes because of the small decrepit bridges but a few times I could even gallop. Once I had a sufficient lead I entertained myself sounding off songs and arias into the jungle. There's nothing more wonderful than riding like this on one's own through the wilderness. Now is the time when the paths are being cleared and repaired. Several groups of men from Namsang were just now occupied with this task. I partly walked up the hill to Tamlu and arrived in the village at sundown. Little has changed here. The gaonburas gave me madhu and chickens and I clarified some points about feasts and gennas which the schoolmaster did not know for sure. |
