As the stretch between Mokokchung and Tamlu bores me by now I try to get on as quickly as possible. Smith lent me his pony, Blackie, and so I dared to complete the twenty seven miles to Chantongia in one day. Nevertheless I started off from Mokokchung only about nine o'clock as I wanted to have a leisurely breakfast with Smith and wait for the post. My cook and the syce for the pony I had sent ahead the previous day and Nlamo has gone home to his village for a few days. So I rode by myself through the forest which already seemed slightly autumnal (66) not that it had lost its freshness or that green was no longer the dominant colour, but some trees do turn yellow and plenty of fallen leaves cover the ground. I had thought that I would make fast progress with the pony but what had seemed level ground on foot now proved to be up and down making it only rarely possible to gallop. |
