Kohima and its bare fields, a dinner party |
text: |
Finally we reach terraced fields. They now are yellowish-brown. The grass is brown and many trees are totally bare. The higher up we get the more like winter the landscape appears and Kohima is hardly recognisable, it is so bare and brown. This is strange as it is only 500 ft. higher (146) than Wakching and in Wakching all is green. It is nice to see Mills again and to stay in the bungalow where I had started my career as a Naga explorer. In the evening we have dinner at Major Williams. The Commissioner, G.D. Walker and Mrs Walker, also are in Kohima now, and Mrs Williams has a visitor, a young girl called Macdonald. So we have a genuine dinner party and this unusual bit of Europe is a lot of fun for me after all the months in the wilderness. |
