big houses of individual clans |
text: |
Here too there are 'big houses' of the individual clans and in one of these I saw a whole skull hanging. This was at Wangpo's house, the father of the pretty Ngap-nun, who is a member of the Small Ang clan. At the Oyabu the 'big house' receives a leg or shoulder of each pig slaughtered by a clan member if it has been raised by the owner himself. The 'big house' in return pays fines for all the clan members who cannot do so themselves. If a clan dies out the entire land it owned goes to the Ang who can either use it himself or can allow others to plant on it. Those then give him a present but do not actually pay him. Sometimes the Ang may also give the land to immigrants from another village such as Mon or Chi as inheritable property. |
