text: Last night was fantastically beautiful. A cloudless sky full of stars reached across the land. Only very fine mist was lying over the mountains and out of it rose the moon, half full and dark yellow, as though made of old gold. She does not rise straight into the sky but sideways like a rocking boat with the curve towards the earth. However at the farthest horizon the lightning of thunderstorms was flashing (113) strangely enough all around this clear sky. Towards morning one of these storms moved over Wakching and in my sleep I heard a cloudburst coming down on my bungalow. I already thought that the weather now had changed and that the beautiful time had ended, but the morning dispelled my fears. A strong wind pushed the last bits of clouds out of the sky and one could see far into the unadministered area more clearly than we had been able to for a long time. The Brahmaputra Valley too was below us, pure and clear, and the light patches of rice fields were clearly contrasted by the darker grass and jungle land. Beyond the valley one could sense the ridges of the Himalayas but soon white clouds rose from the plain and soon settled on the entire valley as a puffy shimmering blanket.
