(195) In the evening came Shankok with Dongba who brought a very good model of the door of a rice granary. Although it is now raining all day long, nevertheless Shankok goes to his fields every day. He hires this or that gang every day as well as several older people. He pays them with rice, the gang however with cash. But frequently his brothers and sisters gangs work in exchange on his fields. Since he is the head of the household he no longer works with his own gang, nor does he get its support in labour. Less wealthy people remain in their gang even after marrying and founding a household and they partly take turns working the fields of the members, partly they work for payment. The weeding of the large field where I went with Shankok on the 24th took five days although he had hired many people every time. Yongang only has two fields, an old one and a new one. He does not seem to pay much attention to them. As Shankok said the other day quite correctly, the wealthy people and the very poor work a lot, (196) but those in the middle make not much of an effort. |
