As we sat in the morung I noticed some implements stuck into the rafters of the very high roof, and inaccessible except by a ladder. I was told that they were used to produce fire ceremoniously. Deusuba agreed to show me how fire could be produced by 'sawing', i.e. by pulling the cane sliver rapidly through the groove of a split stick. Soon the woodshavings placed near the split catch fire and this is nursed by blowing.
