I left Shillong at 5.45 am with Mr. Sakya (?) Census Commissioner of Assam, who had to go by the same flight and was travelling to Gauhati in his car. The artificial lakes below Shillong, which are a new feature, looked very attractive in the morning light. In Europe such lakes would surely be developed as a tourist attraction. |

In Gauhati we found that the plane to Jorhat had not left Calcutta and was not certain to arrive at all. But fortunately I was early and could get a plane which landed at Tezpur and from there went to Jorhat. |

In Jorhat I was met by Mr. R.S. Bedi from Tuensang and M. Alemchiba, Senior Research Officer of Nagaland, and himself an Ao. Between them they had brought three jeeps. We had lunch in a very modern restaurant and then started for Mon. Jorhat has grown very much; there seem to be a lot of good shops and traffic is heavy. |

We drove through the plains past some Ahom monuments, - among them a 'Mahal' in red stone which is well preserved. |
