It used to be paid in mithan, one mithan was the minimum, more could be given. Cash price was Rs. 300-400, and is today Rs. 600. The brideprice includes one necklace of shells. The price for elder and younger daughters is the same. The price for a widow is less. It is paid to the parents or brother of the woman, not to her first husband's kin. A deceased husband's younger brother cannot marry his widow. Similarly a man cannot marry the sister of his deceased wife. Polygamy is permitted but rare; the second wife should not belong to the same clan as the first wife. |
