Application to start new village near Kiyeshe; problems with terracing at Shevekhe |
text: |
To Kiyeshe. On the way Kohozu came and asked to be allowed to start a village at Yangnoi the former Kuki site above Phezanasami. At present occupied by a fort which is to leave in October, I am told. I told him that I would give him leave to settle at the site of Haijang off hand, but that I could not give leave for settlement so near Phezanasami without hearing what Phezanasami had to say on the subject, but that he might go and talk to Phezanasami if he liked. I also said that the questions raised by his wish to separate from Sakhalu must be decided by the Sub-divisional Officer, Mokokchung and were independent of my being able to find a site for him. |

When passing through Shevekhe I had a complaint that some terraces, which I had made for Khowakhu and to which he had contributed part of the cost, had been ruined by the villagers coming and breaking down the channel which fed them. Their excuse was that the making of the channel had caused the heavy rain which has ruined the millet all along the Tizu valley. Apparently it was the Gaonbura who suggested this to them, moved no doubt more by an old enmity with Khowakhu than by a belief in his words. The village however were easily persuaded and will be punished suitably by having to dig more terraces and channels as well as repairing the damage. |
