26/1/1926 To Thevopitsima, a short march. They persuaded me to go up to the village to see a dance in the afternoon. It consisted in the usual procession of males carrying leaf cups while the bucks who fancied themselves gave athletic performances in the middle uttering cries to the effect that the Thevopisima bulls were the strongest, and that their guest's bull was the best - the bull as ever being taken as a pure symbol of prosperity. The performance concluded with a speech by the gaonburas exhorting all the men and women of the village to be virtuous, law abiding and obedient subjects of Government. |
