text: I pushed my Germans off to Kharasom en route for Somra and the Chindwin - no servant, no interpreter knowing not even Hindustani, but very persistent. Optimists; but apparently quite decent people. They will get through, I expect, but will probably leave some of their stuff by the way. They have not much and I sent a man with them to tell Kharasom to treat them kindly and pass the word along to Tushom and so forth.
text: I myself went down to the Lesami-Jessami bridge over the Lania about 12 miles to settle a troublesome case. When I got to my camping place I found the disputed water channel was said to be two miles on and I thought I would get it done that afternoon. I went on over one of the worst routes I have ever had to follow for a circuitous five miles getting angrier and angrier wading up ravines and sliding over rocks, dealt with the case - a dispute between Lozaphehoma and Jessami in Manipur on which Messrs Dennehy and McCall passed orders at Mao, necessarily not having seen the place, orders which half a dozen dobashis had been sent in vain to carry out. The orders were wrong, and had to be amended, which was very difficult as an oath on the lives of a whole village had been taken already. Then back to camp by a better road - about 4 miles - getting in at dusk. I must have covered well over 20 miles altogether.
text: On the way down from Thecholumi I put up Chinese Francolin, bamboo partridge and painted Snipe. The panikhets probably hold the real bird in November.
