21st To Zalukemi, via Perenmi. Counted Zalukemi, the village with the finest prospect (in the literal sense) that I know, overlooking from a great height the low hills of a Dhansiri valley and the outer range. One of the Perenmi gaonburas who met me on the road proved much more communicative when alone. He said that his village first went into the Gaidhiliu-Jadunong business as a quasi-religious affair, a prophetess had appeared who blessed people and caused their villages and crops to prosper and gave them bottles of Telou-du with wonderful properties of curing all disease and endowing with long life. Naturally they did not wish not to benefit and subscribed to buy a mithan as a present and were given the blessing and a bottle of Telou-du. The instructions as to war upon Kukis and sahibs were added later. Telou-du is water from a sacred cave in Cachar from which rises the Telou river, which is well known in Kachha Naga tradition and is the subject of some of their ancient songs, but it is not known whether all that Gaidhiliu distributed really came from that source. |
