7th Sept. Halted Laisong. Mr. Calvert had to go off and settle a land dispute. I visited the village in the morning. The method of settling to which "Morung" a boy belongs is a curious one. An old man or woman from each section of the village attends the birth and whichever first ties a thread round the infant's wrist claims him for his (or her) section's "Morung". Doubtless they arrange beforehand who is to do this, so that the 'Morungs' are kept at approximately equal strength. |

A miserably dark day of cloud and drizzle. It is almost impossible to see anything in these bungalows with small windows and bamboo walls that reflect no light at all. Will the Subdivisional Officer let me know, please, if the substitution of white-washed 'ekra' for bamboo would mean an appreciable increase in cost. I am afraid it would. |
