new Sema settlements; sale of quinine |
text: |
I saw the new Sema settlements which are on the next ridge westwards. Two hill tops have been chosen and look high enough, but Ivikhu lost 5 out of 20 last rains with fever and it is very interesting to see whether they will survive. Ivekhu is a nuisance as he shikars men. Mokakchung has been closed to him by my orders owing to complaints and I had one runaway from Vishepu who was sent back. There was money trouble between the Goanbura and him, now settled. I have given an order that he must produce all people before me who wish to go but the trouble of making enquiries is a great nuisance I have stopped the other village recruiting entirely. They are doing hill top cultivation instead of river valley which is unusual but which will be healthier for them. |

No one in Vipoma would buy or undertake the sale of quinine and I am not going to distribute free as no one will ever buy if some get as gifts. |
