text: (33) Dec. 1st (1937)
text: Woke at 6, up 6.30 & packed japha. Lex later, but coolies didn't show up till 8.15 or more. Raining in buckets, as since monday night. Jeff arrived 8 o'clock, held rapid conference at car window and agreed to start. Some fuss over loads, but coolies off at last.
text: Horace came with car 2p.m., found us still scribbling letters. Shumshu missing, had to be collected from Naga village somewhere down town. Started at 2.40. Mud awful, in spite of chains. Slid off road once, breaking chain. Reached foot of hill about 3.30, & found Jeff & Stone's pony. (34) Drizzle & thick cloud on hills. Road very slimy. Started off & climbed in Scotch mist & dense cloud for one and a half hours, arriving soon after 5 o'clock. Bungalow dreary in the extreme & very cold. Fire smoked out nest of hornets in chimney and nearly smoked us out too. Clothes & bedding in japhas damp, so slung line & hung them to dry. Found Lindsay-Smith's camp-bed useless & broken, so sent if back by Stone's syce.
