Stayed some time. Rather afraid film scratched by scrap of mica which fell out when I changed film. Lex's ankle sore after fall the other day. 9 miles, all downhill - oh, my knee! Much of it slippery too. Tiffin at 1st suspension bridge, and Jeff went on to fish. Lex & I followed slow, with tiffin basket etc. Met coolies leaving camp, hugely delighted with cigarettes & tip, and uttering wild whoops & yells, & skipping down the road like children out of school. Basha not very grand, right alongside bridge, door facing on to servants' quarters. (45) My bed alongside wall with Jeff just other side. Shumshu shocked so put up screen of banana leaves along wall. Barak River very lovely, rocks and deep pools. Bridge not so lovely. Very long, & liberally coated with red paint. Rafts not ready, so agreed to halt, as per original plan. 2 Nagas acting as housemaid & 'tweeny-housemaid ("Placket") a nice lad with 30 or 40 bamboo rings on either knee, and 'tweeny a shy, wild boy with scarlet necklaces. Several Nagas & Kukis camped in coolies quarters. Some of them killed a deer, running it down and cutting it down with daos, brought it in tied (46) to a pole and did a kind of song-&- dance of triumph over it. After cutting it up they offered us a haunch. |
