text: Coolies want to be permanent after all, so agreed, reluctantly. Got off about 8.30. Met headman & party from Nungbi just outside Dunc's. Luikai in his element, they taken flat aback. Followed down road by gang of girls not at all averse to chatting with Luikai. Met party from Nungbi Khulen, also much startled by his transformation. Hardly knew him.
text: When we reached the village he trotted off and reappeared shaven-headed and glorious in his new 'tamasha' cloth, which looked very handsome. Would not produce his daughter. Got hold of moneylender and found he had lost the document so drew up a new one in English and Manipuri and signed and thumb-printed it in all directions. Debt safely paid, we hope.
text: Luikai took a lovely collection of treasures to his house, bottles, tins, books, papers, & the Geographical Magazine ("Bahut, bahut achcha!").
text: Would-be lumbu showed up in a.m. Thought he was coming, but he never arrived at Nungbi.
