Luikai finished all he had to do, so we pushed on. Ticked compounder off in basha in a.m. for talking to me with his back turned and a cigarette in his mouth. He was seriously annoyed and announced he was going home. Talked to him and eventually we got off. Stopped at Khaleng Khunao and Khulen and one other village. All hot and on top of morning's row, most wearing. Lunched at bridge, and Luikai, who had rashly corked zu, had the cork go off like a rocket under his nose. It hit the bridge roof and ricochetted on to the path. Luikai's face was grand. Nungbi man, witness to debt papers, has attached himself as permanent coolie, for medicine thappu. Name Chinaorang. |

Nice Khullakpa, very pleased with cigarettes. Luikai nearly killed me on the hill to the village by giving an imitation of European (me, I think) singing. Sounded like dyspeptic steam whistle. I suspect it was Luikai imitating Dunc. in the cookhouse at Phadang. |
