23rd March, Wednesday. Marched to Shongshun a distance of about 8 miles. The road rather better than usual and we had nothing very stiff to get over either in the way of ascents or descents and had it not been for the heavy rain we had to encounter on the road, we should have had rather a pleasant march of it. As it was we came in wet through and dripping and glad to get to near a fire. |

This place is really composed of two villages side by side, the one called Shongshan containing 24 houses under the leadership of Hinkhomag and the other called Sashire containing 40 houses obeying Thangmang. Both villages have come over from Munneepoor the former the year before last, the latter last year I found they had some 20 guns in their possession which they had brought over from Muneepoor but had originally purchased in Cachar. Dr. Brown which I spoke to him regarding the subject assured me there were neither guns nor ammunition in Maneepoor except that issued out from the Rajah's arsenal and it was utterly impossible for anyone (except a Sepoy) to have a gun in his possession without special permission, and yet I find there is not a single batch of Kookees who come across the border who don't bring in guns with them and that too not by ones and twos but by tens and twenties, and they tell me there's not the least difficulty in purchasing ammunition in Muneepoor but the price was rather high being a rupee per 20 cartridges. |
