This morning we had occular proof of the description of authority exercised by the Munneepuries in witnessing the utter destruction of a Naga village situated some 12 miles to the south east of camp. My attention was first drawn to it by seeing a crowd of Nagas apparently most eagerly watching a long dense column of smoke which rising from a point on one of the southern ridges of the Burrail range was slowly rolling over the valley. On enquiry I was informed that a war party from that village had suddenly fallen upon three coolies of a neighbouring village and had killed one of them after having most horribly mutilated him and as the Government had been unable to obtain possession of the actual murderers the order had been passed to "saf kuro" the village. |
