8th December. Having made over charge of the Deputy Commissioner's office to Mr. James, Assistant Commissioner yesterday, I rode into Dimapore this afternoon after having first inspected the Diphupani Guard House. The men appear to be very much pleased with the site on which I have now built the new Guard House "James town" was a great deal too far off from the Diphupani and the water supply near it was both small and bad, besides which it was too low to be healthy, specially as it was surrounded on all sides by hills covered with a dense undergrowth of jungle. The new Guard House together with the Barrack attached to it has been entirely built by the Constables themselves and they are now busy clearing the jungle all round for a space of 600 yards after which I am going to set them on to make a good garden there. |

The whole of the jungle on the road between Samaguting and Dimapore has been cut and cleared and all the bridges repaired and the coolies are now employed on the earth work at the various places where the road requires raising. At Dimapore the Constables are all busy repairing their lines, and I have put on a number of coolies to cut and drag in the timber that will be required for the new Rest House. For which work I have also put on three carpenters who are now employed in saving up the necessary planks. |
