5th January. We moved camp today to a spot on the left bank of the Zullo near its source and close below the village of Phunama (one of the group called "Sopromah" by the Angamies and "Mao" by the Manipuries). En route we passed through the villages of Jakamah Viswemah and Khuzamah, all the villagers of which thronged out to see us pass by. |

In the evening Colonel Thomson's dak brought in Colonel Dalton's work on the Ethnology of Bengal in which I was not a little amused to recognize my old friend "Aja", Chief of Phusamah (one of the villages belonging to the Sopvomah or Mao group already referred to), figuring as an "Angami Naga" and I am the more surprised that Dr. Brown should have made such a mistake as, if I remember right, he laid considerable stress upon the differences existing between these two tribes (the Angami and Mao) and in a measure very rightly so, for their languages are very dissimilar |
