4th April. Made a short march and moved camp into the village of the Iril just below Gnamchaoo. En route we had some more rain. |

5th April. A very stiff ascent of about two miles brought us into Gnamchao, the Nagas of which had all bolted for fear of being 'pucheraoed' by the Manipuries to act as coolies (without pay). Another equally stiff ascent of about four miles brought us on to the summit of the high range running down parallel with the right bank of the Iril. We then descended for about a mile and reached Mengimai. Half the houses in this village were destroyed and falling into ruins. This I was told was owing to the fury with which an intestine feud had been waged against them by a neighbouring village. After leaving Mengimai we circled round the ridge towards the S.S.E. and after a short descent and equally short ascent we reached Thingba or Impimi and descended its western side, encamped near some rice terraces about l l/2 miles below the village and towards Maitaiphum. |

At about 7 p.m. I received a telegram via Manipur from the Commissioner congratulating me on my success. Thomson has encamped today on the Bank under the Manipuri guidance taking a wrong road. |
