Besides the cases of murder above noticed, two matters deserving mention were also disposed of on this tour. One was the design, real or supposed, of the village of Kanchang to attack and cut up a small body of police under Mr. Muspratt, Sub-divisional Officer, Wokha, which had been sent up to that village in November 1887. The object of Mr. Muspratt's visit was to enquire into the grounds of objection of Kanchang to the settlement of a new Christian village called Wamsken. The reception met with by the party was so menacing that Mr. Muspratt, who had received direct information that an attack was intended, abandoned the enquiry and returned to the plains of Sibsagar. Mr. McCabe, after enquiry, arrived at the conclusion that no actual plot had been formed against Mr. Muspratt's life, but that Kanchang and the adjoining village of Namsang had unquestionably tried by an insolent and threatening demeanour to prevent Mr. Muspratt permitting the founding the new village. He accordingly fined Kanchang Rs.100 and Namsang Rs.200. |
