The total number of licenses to carry guns, new and renewed, issued during the year 1888 was 330 of which 276 were renewed and 54 were new licenses, against 206 renewed and 69 new licenses in 1887. The greater part of the new licenses issued were for old guns brought in for the first time by Mikirs for registration, in consequence of notices issued that unauthorised possession would no longer be condoned after the year 1888. Although notices were issued throughout the Kuki villages, no progress was made in the registration of their guns and it will probably require nothing less than a house-to-house visitation to find out and enforce registration of Kuki guns. Greater attention as the results how was paid to the enforcement of renewal in the case of guns already registered. All guns were renumbered in a new series, and a new system of issuing passes was introduced by the Deputy-Commissioner to facilitate the tracing of defaulters in future. The Deputy-Commissioner has announced that from 1889-90 the law against unlicensed possession of arms will be strictly worked (except in the Kuki country) and fines, at first small in amount, will be imposed for its infringement. The following table shows the distribution of new and renewed gun passes among the various tribes:-

text: There are no arms, ammunition or fireworks shops in the district of the Naga Hills. Pass-holders, after obtaining orders from the Deputy-Commissioner, buy gunpowder at Golaghat or Jorhat.
