The conduct of the Semas within the area under our control was good, and those beyond it were fairly quiet, a result which was due to our restraining influence. During the year under report, the inclusion of the village of Seromi within the political control area was sanctioned by the Government of India. The Seromi people are closely connected with other villages subject to political control, and were given to quarrels with their neighbours across our border, in which the villages on our side of the frontier were liable to become involved. The Seromi people accepted the change without demur. A riot occurred between the villages of Phinsing and Latsami, the ringleaders in which were punished criminally, while the villages were fined. One of the eight Natami men implicated in the murder of three Nagas of Phuigatumi referred to in paragraph 60 of last year's report,, was arrested, but had to be released for want of evidence. The other seven men are still at large. A few houses of the village were reported to have been rebuilt, but the Natami people will not be allowed to settle on their site again until the murderers are delivered up. The Yachumi people, who opposed Captain Woods last year, visited Mokokchang and Kohima, and received presents of red cloth, etc. Their attitude was friendly, and they were anxious that we should visit their village again. |
