The tribe I chose for intensive fieldwork, however, was the Konyak Nagas, and for close to a year I concentrated on the study of this people. The group of villages in which I settled had then fairly recently been brought under British administration, but a much greater number of Konyak villages had remained unadministered, and it was not until 1962 that I had an opportunity to visit some of the previously independent villages.
