it was shown also by the homage that Jn Catt before this court and after the last court surrendered into the hands of the lord by the hands of Wm Adams junior instead of the bailiff in the presence of Wm Adams clerk and Dan Lee two customary tenants of this same manor the same testifying according to the custom of the said manor all that his messuage or tenement called Garlands with appurtenances situated in the said Earls Colne which same certain messuage or tenement the aforesaid Jn Catt took for himself and his heirs at a view with court here held 3.4.1616 to the use and behoof of Margery Penifather late wife of Jn Penifather and her heirs forever upon condition however that Helen wife of Wm Sheppard should have and hold and enjoy all that part of the said messuage and yard of the same with appurtenances which Wm Sheppard and Helen herself now use for and during the natural lifetime of the aforesaid Helen to whom the same said Margery present here in court the lord by his said steward granted and delivered thereof seisin by the rod to have to the aforesaid Margery herself and her heirs upon the said condition to hold from the lord by the rod at the will of the lord according to the custom of the said manor by the rents customs and services thereunto belonging and by right accustomed she paid her fine and fealty and was admitted
