at a court held 24.3.1696 Edw Johnson a customary tenant of this manor surrendered into hand of lord by rod by hand of Jn Eldred esq then steward all his messuages lands and tenements held of this manor by copy of court roll to such uses as would be declared in his last will in writing now at this court appears to homage that Edw Johnson died since last court after which comes here into court Mary Frith eldest of daughters of Edw Frith and produces here in court last will of Edw Johnson dated 2.6.1722 by which Edw demised in these following english words to wit item I devise unto Mary Frith eldest daughter of my nephew Edw Frith and to her heirs forever all those my copyhold lands and tenements called Lowfeild lying and being in Earls Colne aforesaid which I lately purchased of Jn Meriton and Jn Nutman paying unto my said nephew Edw Frith and Mary his wife her father and mother out of the said lands and tenements for and during their natural lives or the life of the survivor of them yearly and every year the sum of 3li to be paid at ladyday and michaelmas day by equal portions without any manner of deduction with clauses entered etc as by said last will plainly appears thereupon Mary Frith petitions of the lord admitted tenant of premises to wit to one messuage one barn and 10a land more or less part of Lowfeild as by hedge and ditch divided and 6a land parcel of said Lowfeild with appurtenances according to tenor of last will of Edw Johnson
