3.12.1593 Edw de Vere earl of Oxford by deed poll duly executed of that estate supposed to have been duly executed but the paper appears as if the seal had been torn off out and the witnesses do not subscribe their names reciting that whereas he the said Edw de Vere at the Wm Lewen dr of civil law had promised that for the better maintenance of the free school usually theretofore kept at Earls Colne in Essex he the said Wm Lewen would enlarge the living to the said school belonging by letting lands thereof to better advantage and also by freely allowing some exhibition thereto and that he would place there a sufficient schoolmaster for instructing youth in good literature for which purpose he the said Edw de Veer had granted to him the said Wm Lewen Roger Harlakenden and Wm Tiffin a commission under the hands and seal of him the said Edw de Veer and but whereas the same had not been performed now therefore the said Edw de Veer by these presents revokes and makes void the said commission and all power thereby granted to them the said Wm Lewen Roger Herlakenden and Wm Tiffin in any way concerning the said school and the said Edw de Veer does hereby nominate present and appoint Wm Adams master of arts vicar of Earls Colne aforesaid to be schoolmaster there during his life
