25.1.1723 by a writing of that date purporting to be a copy of a deed sealed and delivered by Eliz Cressener widow Eliz Clifford widow and Ann Cressener spinster all of Newington Stoke in Middlesex in the presence of two subcribeing witnesses they the said Eliz Cressener Eliz Clifford and Ann Cressener for divers good causes and considerations present constitute and appoint Thos Barnard vicar of Earls Colne in Essex and master of arts to be a schoolmaster of the free grammar school in Earls Colne aforesaid there to teach and instruct all free scholars in the said school in the latin and greek tongues as are and have been usually there taught and to receive and take to his own use the prerequisites and profits properly belonging to the same school to hold and enjoy the said mastership and benefits and profits thereof unto him the said Thos Bernard for the term of ninety nine years if he shall so long live and demean himself in all things to our reasonable satisfaction and content and shall constantly by himself or a sufficient deputy teach and instruct the said free scholars as he ought to do or otherwise to be put out of the said place at our pleasure
