in the name of god amen the 1.7.1531 I Wm Carter of White Colne in the diocese of London make and ordain this my last will and testament in this manner following first I bequeath my soul to almighty god my maker and saviour and to our lady saint mary and to all saints and my body to be buried in the churchyard of Allsaints in Colne aforesaid item I bequeath to the high altar of the said church in restitution of my tithes negligently forgotten or withdrawn 6s8d item I bequeath to the high altar of the church of Colne Engaine in like manner 6s8d item to paul's pardoner 12d item I bequeath to the greyfriars in Colchester there to have two trentals done for my soul and all christians 20s item I bequeath to the friars in Sudbury in like manner 20s item to the friars in Clare for like prayers 20s item I bequeath to the poor of Colne 12d and to every monk there as priest or novice 12d item to every being at my burial 6d item I bequeath to the church of White Colne one cow there to have one obit kept for my soul my wife my father's and mother's and all christians with the form thereof and to be prayed for in the bead roll and a cow for a light afore our lady item I bequeath to the church of Colne Engaine one cow for an obit yearly in like manner item I bequeath to Jn my son my best brass pot a basin of latten and my hutch and to his wife my frieze mantle item I bequeath to Jeff my son my best pan and basin of latten and to his wife a pair of beads of white amber the pater nosters of silver and gilt item I bequeath to Wm my son my cauldron hanging in the back house and all my clothes belonging to my body item I bequeath to Kath my daughter daughter to mine eldest son Jn I had a cow four sheep a little brass pot a kettle and three pewter dishes item to Jn Crabbe my lad a cow four sheep and a bed that he lieth in item to Jn Warde late my servant four sheep item to the said Wm my son my shot table in the hall and mine great hutch item I bequeath to Marge my daughter's daughter all the residue of my household and hostilments item furthermore I give and bequeath to Jn my son Jeff and Wm each of them two silver spoons item I bequeath to the said Jn my son my tenement and lands set and lying in Gaines Colne and White Colne with all the appurtenances thereto belonging both free and copy whole as now Jn Potter doth hold in farm with 3p of meadow lying in Longstart Meadow to have and to hold to the said Jn and his assigns during his life and after the decease of the said Jn to remain to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten and if the said Jn my son die without such heirs male then I will that all the said premises remain to Wm my godson the eldest son of my son Wm and his heirs of his body lawfully begotten and if the said Wm my godson die without heirs of his body lawfully begotten then I will the foresaid tenements lands and meadow shall remain to the next heir of his brethren or sisters moreover I give and bequeath to the said Jn my son a parcel of ground in Earls Colne called Newmans to him his heirs and assigns upon condition that the said Jn shall during his life yearly keep an obit in Gaines Colne church for my soul and my wife's item I bequeath to Jeff my son 8li in money and a parcel of land called Grey Crofte lying in White Colne and Gaines Colne to him and his heirs and assigns so that he in likewise yearly during his life keep an obit in the church of White Colne item I give and bequeath to Wm my son the tenement and lands both free and copy that I dwell in called Buttelers sometime Millons with all the appurtenances thereto belonging and a parcel of land in White Colne called Bukks to him his heirs and assigns so that the said Wm in likewise during his life yearly do keep an obit for my soul and my wife's where he shall think best for his ease item I bequeath to the said Marge my daughter's daughter 5marks in money and a cow and my tenements called Drewes and Rysings with their appurtenances set and lying in Earls Colne to the said Marge her heirs and assigns forever the residue of mine other goods and debts not bequeathed I put them to the discretion to mine executors to dispose in deeds of charity as they shall think best to the pleasure of almighty god and for the help of my soul my wife's my friends' and all christian souls which I ordain make and name executors Jn and Jeff my sons and Hen Polyn supervisor in witness Jn Barbur Wm Browne Wm Love and Jn Estey
